    From the Desk of the President

    Congratulations SESHRM!! You have been awarded the 2016 Gold Excel Award! This award recognizes a chapter's outstanding achievements in providing meaningful programs and services to our members. It also is recognition of our continued growth and development as a business leader, capable of developing strategies that lead to business success!

    The national conference is just a couple of weeks away! Please let me know if you are planning to attend. There are a handful of SESHRM chapter members attending so this would be a great chance to see some familiar faces down in New Orleans.

    If you haven't renewed your 2017 membership yet, you have until Friday. After that, your membership will be deactivated. You may still pay to attend meetings as a guest, but you will not receive the monthly newsletter or other email communications and will not have access to certain portions of the website. We hope that you will all continue your membership with us and renew today.

    Karla Lundell, one of our Program Coordinators on the SESHRM Board has accepted a new position out of state and therefore has resigned her position with the board. The Program Coordinators and Program Committee members are very diligent in their work and have already secured all speakers and topics for 2017 and have a great start on 2018 as well. The Board is currently considering options for Karla's replacement and we will make an announcement once a decision has been made. We want to thank Karla for volunteering with SESHRM and we wish her the best of luck in her new adventure!

    Make sure to register for the June meeting by Friday! Michael McKnight from Boyce Law Firm will be presenting: Conflict Resolution in the Workplace for the HR Professional. He has over 30 years of experience and has focused as a mediator for all types of disputes for the last 10 years. This should be another great meeting so don't miss it. Hope to see you there!

    Conflict Resolution in the Workplace: Training for the HR Professional
    Presented by: Michael McKnight from Boyce Law Firm

    This presentation provides training to the HR professional on how to recognize and resolve disputes in the workplace ranging from minor disagreements to serious issues which could result in litigation.

    About the Speaker

    Michael S. McKnight is a partner in Boyce Law Firm, L.L.P., and has represented hundreds of employers, their insurers and self-insurers across South Dakota in the past 30 years of practice. Mike’s vast experience before the South Dakota Department of Labor includes having tried over 100 cases in front of administrative law judges. Mike has also defended workers’ compensation bad faith claims and has lectured extensively on the subject of workers’ compensation and employment law. He has also served as an expert witness for the defense in bad faith cases. In addition, he has handled administrative appeals to both the circuit court and the South Dakota Supreme Court.

    In the past ten years, Mike has developed an active and growing practice as a mediator of all types of disputes. He has mediated over 300 cases ranging from workers' compensation claims to personal injury actions, insurance bad faith claims, construction claims and environmental claims.

    The University of Sioux Falls will be offering the SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification prep course this fall. The course runs from September 14 – November 16, 2017 and is held on the USF campus.     May Legislative Update

    Employer and Civil Rights Groups Oppose Merger of EEOC and OFCCP
    Trump budget proposal seeks to reduce redundancies

    An item in President Trump's proposed budget for fiscal year 2018 met immediate resistance on Capitol Hill and among employer and civil rights groups: merging the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) into the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), creating one agency to combat employment discrimination.

    "OFCCP and EEOC will work collaboratively to coordinate this transition to the EEOC by the end of FY 2018," the proposed budget states. "This builds on the existing tradition of operational coordination between the two agencies. The transition of OFCCP and integration of these two agencies will reduce operational redundancies, promote efficiencies, improve services to citizens and strengthen civil rights enforcement."

    OSHA Delays Electronic Record-Keeping Rule

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) plans to postpone a record-keeping rule that would have required certain employers to electronically submit injury and illness data to the agency starting on July 1. The agency has not provided any additional information about if or when electronic submission will be required.

    OSHA announced on its website on May 17 that it "is not accepting electronic submissions at this time and intends to propose extending the July 1, 2017 date."

    The news of the delay didn't come as a surprise, given that there was no indication that OSHA had even created a portal for employers to submit electronic data, said Patrick Miller, an attorney with Sherman & Howard in Denver.
